Food Pathogen Research Group at Bangor
The Food Pathogen Research Group is involved in culturing Campylobacter jejuni in the laboratory which has recently been identified by the Food Safety Association (https://www.food.gov.uk/) as being a food pathogen causing a significant number of infections in the UK annually. This pathogen had escaped the attention of microbiologists because even though gastrointestinal problems occur, few people infected with this bacteria are hospitalized, unlike infections caused by Salmonella or Listeria. Therefore, the aim of this research work is to identify naturally occurring compounds showing bioactivity against these microorganisms. These compounds will be incorporated into the plastic components used in the packaging of chicken products and tested further to determine the effectiveness of this approach.
